Rogan's Recollections

(And Occasional Historical Observations)

160th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin (November 30, 1864)

Inside view of the Carter House situated on the Franklin battlefield

Today, on the 160th anniversary of the bloody Battle of Franklin, fought in the closing months of America's Civil War (November 30, 1864), I toured the battlefield and took this photograph inside the office of Fountain Branch Carter, whose home and adjoining farm office were built on the Columbia Pike and syood directly in the middle of what became a massive firefight that left 2,000 dead and 10,000 casualties in five of the bloodiest hours of the four year battle.

This photograph depicts the south wall of Mr. Carter's office, which faced toward the direction of the Confederate charge. The bullet holes have never been patched. With the morning sun Illuminating from the outside, one can see that this was not the ideal place for one to hide when hell broke loose on that long ago afternoon.
